Wattle & Daub
A wattle and daub infill in your timber frame is a time honoured, eminently reusable and enviromentally friendly method of producing warm, strong walls. It will potentially survive for centuries, and can be wet down and re-applied at any point in time.
Lime Plaster
Traditional lime plaster has the advantage of flexibility, allowing it to move with the building without the damage suffered by modern, more rigid materials. It also has the huge advantage of breathability, allowing the passage of moisture out through the walls, whereas modern materials tend to trap moisture within the walls, damaging the timber frame. Examples of these differences can be seen in some of the pictures in the 'About Us' section of this site.
Pargeting
Where decorative plasterwork is required on walls, a lime plaster is the best medium to work with. In addition to the advantages outlined above, it has a less harsh and angular appearance than cement based work, making it the appropriate material to use on traditional buildings with their unique character.
Lime Wash
Many modern paints can prevent a building from breathing, leading to the same long-term damage that is caused by the use of cement. A lime wash, however, will provide decoration, breathability, and a degree of weatherproofing to a building. We strongly recommend the use of either lime wash or a breathable modern emulsion.
